Brazil England A summary of the top performing teams

FRANCE System: 4-3-3

Style: fast, powerful and direct counter attacking In possession:

Retaining and building: The French were capable of playing from the back and through midfield, but were not solely focused on accumulating lots of short passes. Generally, all their players were technically excellent at passing and receiving.

The goalkeeper, Paul Nardi, possessed excellent distribution and was intelligent and effective in his decision-making and execution over both short and long distances.

Penetrating: France were particularly dangerous when playing passes in behind the opposition for their fast forwards to exploit. Incisive and penetrative passes came from a range of sources, including back players and from midfield. Both defensive and midfield units demonstrated a good range of passing.

Countering: immediately after regaining possession France looked for opportunities to break quickly. Direct and fast counter-attacks from all areas of the field were a significant part of the French approach.

Creating and scoring: all the French forwards had the ability to play in all three attacking positions within the same game, interchanging positions regularly. Most goal scoring chances resulted from quick forwards using their speed to get in behind the opposition creating shooting or crossing opportunities.

Out of possession: Pressing: the French pressed high up the pitch when possible, but didn’t appear to have a disciplined structure to do so.

Deny, Delay, Dictate: forward and midfield players didn’t recover quickly, which at times left the back players exposed. Defenders coped due to excellent physical qualities and the ability to defend 1v1.

Emergency defending: when necessary the back four defended sensibly clearing the ball with distance
