BRAZIL Holders of the tournament
System of play: 4-3-3 attacking v England and France; 4 -1-1-1-3 v other nations
Style of play: Brazil were very attack minded but direct in their style. It was clear that the Brazilians wanted to be in the fi nal third as quickly as possible in order to get their skillful players in dangerous attacking situations.
There was evidence that the Brazilians could play a variety of styles and had the ability to switch between styles during games. The Brazil squad was made up of very good footballers, all of whom were good athletes. Interestingly, the players were not one or the other, they were both.
PORTUGAL System: 4-3-3 Style of play: When the opposition had
possession Portugal defended from the top of the centre circle looking to steal possession and counter the opposition. During counter-attacks the Portuguese looked to exploit the spaces around the sides of their opponents using their quick and skilful wide players.
In possession: There were very few attempts to build play patiently. Instead the Portuguese appeared happier attacking quickly on the break. Lots of intelligent movement was apparent with clever rotations involving the wide players coming in from wide positions to support the centre forward when possible. Portugal were most dangerous when counter- attacking with speed and intelligence.
Out of possession: Portugal were disciplined, well organised and intelligent in setting defensive traps around the half way line with the aim of regaining possession and counter-attacking.

In possession: Retaining and building: Brazil had the ability to change the speed of their play, with the tempo becoming very quick in the fi nal third. They would pass backwards when necessary, but wanted to get the ball into the fi nal third as soon as possible. They rarely risked the ball when passing, showing excellent game understanding.
Penetrating: the goalkeeper and back players were very direct hitting long passes into any of the three front players, usually with passes in the air. Evangelista would penetrate by running with the ball.
Countering: Brazil exploited opponents' set plays by countering from deep in their own half using great pace and creativity when doing so.
Creating and scoring: the whole Brazilian team was capable of creating and scoring. Brazil attacked with three front players , two midfi eld players and two full backs all involved. Front players didn’t play in one position they played in all three positions at some stage within the same game .
Out of possession: Pressing: Brazil tried to win the ball back as early as possible with the front players working hard to keep the ball in their opponents back third.
