“ Process boards provide coaches with a visual means of presenting and revisiting learning activities”

Introduction This work was largely the result of a teaching and learning project at The FA National Faculty (Education). It is part of a larger ongoing education project where the focus is on identifying and sharing best practice about coaching football in junior clubs and schools. The intention in writing this short paper is to provide support for grassroots coaches in planning or structuring a progressive sequence of learning activities and to introduce the idea of process boards as both a planning and coaching tool.

Process boards Process boards provide a pictorial representation of the learning activities or tasks that might be undertaken over a series of coaching sessions. They simplify the planning process by adopting a more visual approach that is arguably better suited to a practical environment, where pictures can capture the essence of an activity more clearly. The idea is to show the whole sequence of learning activities starting with the most basic and finishing with the most complex. The process board may have a number of learning and teaching functions:

(i) it provides the grassroots coach with the opportunity to set out a visual representation of the progressive learning activities needed to extend player learning;

(ii) players are shown the ‘big picture’ of the games they will play and the skills they will be expected to perform across a series of sessions, allowing them to make connections and consolidate prior learning;

(iii) there is also a social or reciprocal learning opportunity provided as the process boards can be used as a teaching tool if kept close to the coaching area.
