Setting the Scene Mindset according to the age-appropriate blend of ‘Deliberate practice’ (Characteristics: High and sustained physical and mental effort, intention to improve, correction of errors and work-like).


Although the session has a primary attacking (‘Control through interchange’) emphasis, out of possession (‘Organise’) and transition (‘React’) should always be kept up to a high standard for relevant and meaningful practice to be achieved.


Areas are smaller than usual to speed up the decision-making process to levels that could be associated with play in the attacking half and in and around the attacking third for the purpose of preparing players to be able to cope with little time and space


Conditions Game 1: Central midfield rotation - 1st priority is to play through the opposition a. Only 1 player per box in the midfield area b. Player in possession can only pass to a player who is changing areas with a team-mate (i.e. flank to midfield box or from one box to another in the middle of midfield) unless it’s to a player in the full-back or centre-back positions c. Players have a maximum of 4 touches. Particular emphasis will be on different central midfield /wide player/No.10/Centre forward interchange permutations.


Game 2: Wide area rotation - 1st priority is to play down the sides of the opposition a. Same conditions as game 1, apart from (b) where now it’s only a GK or player in the CB position who can receive a pass without changing areas with a team-mate. Particular emphasis will be on different full-back/wide-player/central midfield/No. 10/centre- forward interchange permutations with one example being: Full-back gets forward and becomes wide player, in turn the central midfield player covers the full-back position and the wide-player goes into the central-midfield territory.


Game 3: Free-play Play what you see based on previous games


Main theme: attacking interchange (connection, structure and movement) In preparation for receiving the ball, players off the ball must connect and swap areas with a team-mate on the travel of a pass. Individuals on both teams are asked to constantly connect and interchange with team-mates for the benefit of playing over (units/pillars), around (down the sides of the opposition) or through (in between and through units of the opposition) with the following options in mind factors in mind:


a) Connection/communication with team-mates (those on the ball and off the ball) b) Angle and Timing of interchange c) Weight of Pass d) Finding ‘Pockets’ of Space to receive in e) Maintaining Team-Shape/Structure f) Multi-tasking


Out of Possession – organise In preparation for when possession is lost, players on both teams should consider how best they might defend (‘Organise’) as a group.


Transition- react In preparation for regaining or losing possession, players on both teams should how they might take ‘control’ or ‘recover’ as a group.
