Gareth Southgate FA Head of Elite Development

As a player, the further I progressed the more I wanted to learn. As you develop as a player and you get to the highest level it’s the small pieces of information you look for. I always look at the skills you have as a footballer like a set of armour and you want another piece to complete the overall picture. I wanted that bit of detail that would improve me to the next level.

I wanted coaches that challenged me, that stretched me and who put on enjoyable sessions that were innovative and encouraged you to learn in different ways.

Coaches have to be inventive in the way that they put their message across. I think if you try and mimic a coach you’ve had in the past or try and act in the way that they acted then you’ll be unnatural in the way you come across.

You’ve got to be yourself and be true to your values and beliefs.
