Money, passport, toothbrush … Kindle
A Kindle is the perfect travelling companion, wherever your holiday takes you. In time for summer, we’ve picked some of our favourite USA destinations and paired them with the perfect reads
The perfect escape plan Somewhere romantic? Exotic? The past? Outer space? Wherever you want to be transported to, a truly great story can take you there. And a Kindle e-reader is the ideal way to make
sure you’ve really got away from it all while you’re on holiday. Why? Because, unlike a tablet, an e-reader won’t tempt you to check your work emails. That’s right – no updates or push notifications to spoil your downtime.
Way to go Whether you’re on a weekend city break or spending three weeks on the other side of the world, a Kindle is the ideal holiday companion this summer. So, over the next few weeks we’ll be picking some of our favourite destinations, near and far, and offering a book pairing for each holiday. What are you waiting for? Pack your bags and get reading.
New York ExperienceNew York
The city might sizzle in the summer, but there are plenty of ways to keep your cool. You’ll come across fabulous ice cream bars in every district, and the NYC Parks Department is hosting a season of free movie screenings across town. ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at Rockaway Beach? Yes please! There are some great exhibitions too, including ‘Arcade Classics’ at theMuseum of the Moving Image. Entry includes tokens to play the vintage computer games, so you can resurrect your skills at ‘Pong’, ‘Tron’ and ‘Donkey Kong’.
WHY NOT TRY ‘Minor Characters: A Beat Memoir’ by Joyce Johnson Whether you’ve read and re-read ‘On the Road’ and know every line of ‘Howl’ or not, this book is a fascinating and engagingly written account of what it was
like to be part of the 1950s Beat Generation literary scene as it blossomed. Joyce Johnson (then Joyce Glassman) was a young New Yorker who joined the arty Greenwich Village set and, a budding writer herself, became romantically involved with Jack Kerouac. Johnson’s book captures New York at one of its most exciting creative peaks, and many of the places mentioned in its pages are still there to be enjoyed today.
