With or without EU
Brexit has left thousands of Europeans in London wondering what the future holds.Kate Lloyd and David Clack hear what it means to four of them
‘I THINK EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE’
Kamil 31, Highbury
I’M FROM WARSAW in Poland and I’ve been living in London for one-and-a-half years. I first came to England when I went to Glastonbury in 2012. Back then I couldn’t speak any English. I moved here to improve my English, experience a new culture, and to be with my boyfriend who is English. I like my life here, and I enjoy
being in London. It’s not as easy as it was in Poland – I worked in finance there and I own a flat in Warsaw. At the moment I work in retail and share a rented flat. On the day of the referendum
result I had ten or 15 phone calls from friends, asking ‘What are we going to do? Do we have to go back?’ I told them ‘Slowly, slowly, we have to wait and see what happens.’ But I do worry about what Brexit
will mean for London. In London, such a huge amount of people are from different countries around the world, so if the decision is that people without British passports have to leave the country, who’s going to be left? England, and especially London, is historically made of people from other countries, London would be very empty. Overall, I’m feeling very positive:
I think everything will be fine. I’m getting closer to finding a better job, and then I can get the official documents I need to stay here. If the worst happens, I still have family in Poland, and I have opportunities there. Either way, the future will be interesting.
