1 Floral print outfit


Sir Norman Hartnell, 1970s Red-carpet starlets, take note: Her Maj is happy to wear the same dress on multiple occasions. This was one of her faves at the time of her 1977 Silver Jubilee. Its fluid cut and floral print, with a matching hat, nod to contemporary trends, but it’s formal enough for a right royal do. In what’s become classic Queen style, she almost always teams these ensembles with the same kind of handbag (not in the show) from London shop Launer. We like to imagine it contains a pearl-handled revolver and a bag of humbugs.

Ian Thomas, 1986 The Queen was the first British sovereign to visit China. This frock created for the historic occasion is embroidered with peony blossoms, China’s national flower. So, a dress with diplomacy in its very fibres.
