A CLEAN FOR EUROPE

As the city of Stockholm got ‘Eurosong fever’ (to quote a certain Irish priest), its impressive venue, the Ericsson Globe, was in need of a deep clean, in order to be ready for the prestigious pop event. Kärcher, as part of their cultural sponsorship programme were all too keen to take on the task. Here, they tell us all about it.

Earlier this year, for the first time in 27 years, the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm got a thorough cleaning in aid of it hosting the Eurovision Song Contest this May. Performed with hot water and entirely without chemicals, the clean was executed by Klätterservice AB with equipment from Kärcher as part of the cleaning giant’s unique cultural sponsorship programme.

“The Ericsson Globe is a national symbol for Sweden in both sports and the arts, with its unique spherical shape. In the presence of a large public spectacle like Eurovision it is important that we show it from its best side,” said Jonas Palmgren, CEO of Kärcher Sweden. “We want to protect buildings of great interest, not least from a cultural perspective, and we have a global programme where we help clean unique buildings worldwide. Regarding the Ericsson Globe, we assisted both with counselling and the equipment needed free of charge.”

The Ericsson Globe is located right next to Nynäsvägen (Highway 73), a heavy route into Stockholm city where around 80,000 cars and buses pass the iconic venue every day. The geographical location with proximity to the water made the environmental aspects extremely important. Even though the cleaning was performed without chemicals, it was important to minimise the spread of particles, since impurities in the waste water could have a negative impact on the environment.

To avoid dangerous particles spreading through the rinse water, a filter was placed adjacent to the wells so that contaminants such as heavy

metals and oil residues were safely collected and disposed of. A Kärcher HDS 12/18-4 SX hot water pressure washer was used together with water- powered iSolar 800 brush heads.

“It’s extremely important to take care of the rinse water, because even if the cleaning is performed with hot water only and without chemicals, there are a lot of pollutants in the water due to 27 years of traffic film and accumulated dust from exhaust and tyres on the surface of the Globe that could be harmful to the environment,” explained Palmgren.
