MM Dreams

r

Pregnancy symptoms are often niggly and annoying, but there’s one symptom that’s a little more out of this world….

Did you know that mysterious, exceptionally realistic and sometimes just plain wacky dreams are actually a common occurrence during pregnancy? If you’re being affected by weird and wonderful flights of

fantasy during the night, don’t panic! Rather than being portents of things to come, strange dreams are just your subconscious’ way of reflecting how you’re feeling or what you’re going through. There’s no doubt that in pregnancy you go through profound

upheavals – physically and emotionally. Hormones are raging around your body and you’re trying to adjust psychologically to the idea of being a mum, so, if you suddenly start to dream about unusual things, such as talking animals, just take a deep breath! Just put it down to a mixture of excitement and the progesterone that’s surging through your veins.

First trimester

Many women find that in the early stage of pregnancy they dream about giving birth to a grown child. It’s thought that this reflects the hope for an easy birth. During this time, flowers, gardens or seeds may also feature, expressing fertility. Dreams of intruders or dangers may relate to a fear of motherhood, or of miscarriage.

Second trimester

During this trimester, dreams of your husband’s or partner’s infidelity are usually related to feelings of insecurity about your changing body. Many women will also dream of their teeth falling out, which shows anxiety about self image, which is highlighted as the body shape changes.

12 Modernmum Third trimester

Dreams depicting details of labour are common during this period. These express a woman’s hopes and fears, but are also stimulated by Braxton Hicks contractions as the womb prepares for labour.

What should you do about strange dreams?

Unless they are very violent, you should simply enjoy this, quite literally, dream world! Record your dreams and analyse what you think they mean in a journal. Share them with your partner – he may be experiencing weird dreams of his own!

AEROPLANES

Travel, change, and a desire to be in a new and different place, either physically or emotionally.

AN ATTACK

Can indicate fear or anxiety about some unknown part of your life.

BABIES

Dreams involving babies are common during pregnancy, but are not premonitions. They’re simply your way of dealing with the anxiety and responsibility that you’re taking on in parenting.
