He continues: “The frequency of a service really depends on how much a customer is happy to do themselves. If they want us to look after everything then a minimum of every two weeks for an outdoor residential pool is recommended. Many pools we look after on a weekly basis.”


Bell Leisure is based in West Sussex, 30 minutes west of Brighton. The team of pool engineers are able to travel to all major towns and surrounding villages within Sussex, as well as southern parts of Surrey.


A typical residential service package includes a full valet of the pool and cover, and electronic full langelier water balance test, chemical adjustment, filter back wash and a check of the plant operation. All results are then recoded on site.


Says Lawrence: “Our service packages range in price from £1,400 to £5,000 depending on the location, frequency and size of the pool.” Commercial pool specialists Hydrospec offer planned preventative maintenance packages which are designed to keep the pool and plant room in first-class and efficient working order – which is particularly essential in the commercial sector.


PREVENTATIVE MEASURES As a rule of thumb, Hydrospec advise that a chemical filter check and separate service should be carried out alternately once every six months and the same goes for a chemical dosing plant check and service.


“The results of all our service visits are recorded by our engineers on a tablet system,” explains John Cheek FISPE, Managing Director of Hydrospec.


“The engineers complete a checklist during each service and all the results are logged. We also take photographs of the readings we get from the pool and any potential problems are also photographed and logged. All of that information can then be remotely downloaded to the office, and parts can be ordered if necessary. We find that this system helps to keep turnaround times down to a minimum”

With the majority of their commercial pool contracts, Hydrospec have a call-out facility in which they have to respond within 24 hours, or in some cases within four hours.


“Most of the facilities management companies are asking for the four hour response time,” reveals John. “Quick response times are essential, as some leisure operators get fined by the local authority if the pool is closed.”


BUDGET CUTS He adds: “However, if a pool is properly serviced and maintained, we wouldn’t expect to get any call-outs. For that reason, pool operator training is very important. It also means that we can talk the in-house maintenance team through any issues over the phone – saving both time and money.”


John reveals that often, when leisure budgets are cut, regular pool servicing is one of the first expenses to get the axe: “The trouble is that many leisure operators are working on a shoestring. While savings can be made by cutting down on servicing in the short-term, the cost of having to put things right and carry out repairs further down the line can be expensive.”
