Swimming Pool Scene NEWS

Brazil’s Olympic Pools Are On The Move

The company behind the temporary swimming pools used at last year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro have refuted claims that the pools have fallen into disrepair and have revealed that the pools will soon be moved to permanent locations. Italian-based Myrtha Pools said the news concerning the deterioration of the facilities after the Games, which plunged Rio 2016’s legacy plans into crisis, was “partially incorrect”.

They revealed the main temporary swimming pool at the Olympic Aquatics Centre would be installed at Fortaleza do Sao Joao in Rio de Janeiro and the water polo pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre will be turned into a 50m pool in the Amazonian city of Manaus. The announcement by Myrtha Pools comes after a series of images showed the poor state of venues used at Rio 2016 just six months after the conclusion of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The water in one of the warm-up swimming pools had turned orange and was littered with insects and mud, while the Aquatics Centre is also beginning to crumble, according to reports in Brazil. “The news concerning the deterioration of Olympics’ sports facilities after the Games, including the swimming pools completed for the event, was partially incorrect,” the company said in a statement.

Italian Show Success

Exhibitors at the ForumPiscine trade show in Bologna, Italy, enjoyed a busy few days with visitor numbers up by 10 per cent on the 2015 edition of the show.

Some 150 exhibitor companies descended on the Bologna Exhibition Centre in February for the three-day show which is dedicated to swimming pools, spas and wellness.

More than 7,500 visitors from across Europe and as far afield as the United States visited the show and made the most of over 20 free training workshops and seminars on offer.

The bi-annual exhibition is the only trade fair of its kind in Italy for those in the pool, spa and associated industries.

The International Congress was a highlight of the exhibition and visitors flocked to hear presentations on subjects such as commercial aquatic management, customer care and business management. The event was rounded off with the Forum Dinner Party, where exhibitors enjoyed dinner with guest speakers and entertainment provided by The Hangovers who appeared on the Italian X Factor.

“Footage shot clearly shows that the Rio 2016 temporary pools, completed by the Italian company Myrtha Pools, have already been dismantled and are ready to be sent to other venues for permanent installation before the end of the year.”

Diabetes Challenge

Diabetes UK’s annual Swim22 fundraising challenge is on course to be the most successful to date this year, with an increase in participation of more than 22 per cent. So far, almost 2,000 people have signed up for the challenge, where participants must swim 22 miles – the width of the Channel – in their local pool and at their own pace, between February 22 and May 22. All money raised from the challenge will fund Diabetes UK’s research and support for people with the condition. Seven-times Paralympic gold medal-winning swimmer and supporter of the Swim22 campaign Sascha Kindred CBE said: “One of the great things about Swim 22 is that you don’t need to be a champion swimmer to take part.
