Pipe Dream Comes True


Most consider threading a simple secondary turning operation, but nothing could be further from the truth at Borusan Mannesmann Pipe US Inc. (Baytown, TX). Tis industry-leading steel pipe manufacturer produces more than 300,000 tons (272,160 t) of pipe per year, and each piece—some greater than 13" (330 mm) in diameter and 40' (12.2-m) long—needs to be threaded at both ends. Plus, every thread the company generates must be perfect because the piping is


used in both down-hole well and overland transport applications within the oil & gas industry. So it goes without saying that any thread connection failure in the field would be disastrous. At its new facility, Borusan Mannesmann installed two innovative cells for


small and large diameter pipe machining. Tese systems completely automate the threading process, and allow the company to keep pace with increased customer demand—using fewer pieces of equipment—while also ensuring continuous thread quality. Each cell has two four-axis CNC turning machines and accompanying pipe-han- dling systems. Te cells turn and thread pipe ODs, forming what are known as the


Innovative cells allow pipe producer to thread its way to faster output.


Borusan Mannesmann uses special tooling to slash pipe-threading cycle times by half while improving thread quality and extending tool life. Here it machines a long connection type on a 9.625” diameter, 40' long pipe.
