Dental Appliance Treats Sleep Apnea

S

leep apnea affects an estimated 12 million people. By disrupting breathing dur- ing sleep, the condition lowers oxygen levels in the body, which can lead to a host of serious physi- cal and emotional issues including Type 2 diabe- tes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, memory impair- ment, impotence, weight gain, fibromyalgia, gastric reflux., anxiety disorders, and depression. There are three types

of sleep apnea. The most common is obstructive, caused when the muscles and soft tissues of the throat relax and collapse, obstructing the airways. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of the two. Though sleep apnea is more common in those who are overweight, male and over age 40, it can affect people of any age or weight. Symptoms often include loud snor- ing, morning fatigue, and waking with a headache or dry mouth. Still, not all who snore have sleep apnea, and some with the disorder don’t snore at all. In the past, sleep apnea was most commonly treated through use of a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pres- sure) machine, which uses a breathing mask to maintain open airways during sleep. Though effective, the machine is also noisy and cumbersome. Today, many patients opt instead for a custom-made dental appliance that fits into the mouth and aligns the jaws for the free passage of air during the night. The result is sounder sleep for longer peri- ods and increased oxygen levels. The appliance is available at Northstar Dental Care

in Nazareth, which offers safer alternatives in dentistry, including mercury-free dentistry. In practice since 1998, Marwan Bassil, D.D.S. offers patients the most current techniques and materials, and is certified in implantology, full-mouth reconstruction, and INVISALIGN. Bassil can re- move old mercury fillings safely to eliminate exposure and replace with tooth-colored resin composite fillings, which are not only safer and more aesthetically pleasing, but also add strength to weakened teeth.
