ll bodies rely upon alignment to express optimum function. The amount of energy that enables us to go forth and accomplish things in life relies upon it. There are always differences from one person to another on how they are able to align their structures for balanced function. These differences are caused by certain factors, like different genetic body types, adopted postural patterns, com- promises for injuries and repetitive use. These factors combine to create a unique postural alignment for each person. Natural alignment is not the same


for all bodies. The natural alignment appears to be genetic and not a fac- tor of learning, injury and patterning. But, if you happened to learn—like most of us—that in order to sit straight you have to bring and hold your shoul- ders back, you are creating a conflict in your structure with the same result of a musculoskeletal strain, pain and injury. The point is that the body will not adjust without permanent structural conflict to any change against natural pattern that life brings to us. There are a lot of ways in which structures misalign their natural pat- terns. Over the course of life, our bod- ies form strain patterns, acting as a stor- age system for the accumulated physi- cal and emotional events. Inefficient movement habits in daily life activities, work and athletic pursuits; the body’s response to poorly designed phones, of- fice furniture, car and plane seats; and each injury, illness or emotional trauma all leave an imprint in our structure. Any therapeutic approach that

is working with the reorganization of the human body considering the unique natural alignment of the person is fundamental. There are predictable responses in the structure that, when understood, can increase the effective- ness of any type of intervention, be it manual therapy, prescribed exercise, therapeutic yoga and others. Natural alignment is the first assess- ment that is made in any structural inte- gration process—Dr. Ida Rolf’s method of structural integration is a form of hands-on manipulation and movement education that is designed to restore a person’s body to its natural state of align- ment. Ease, functional excellence and well-being in every sense is enhanced when the structure is balanced.
