National law firm Gateley plc has appointed John Downs as a new real- estate partner at its office in Reading. Downs spent most of his career in London at Fieldfisher LLP before joining Shoosmiths LLP in Southampton. He has been involved in a wide range of commercial property work, with a particular focus on the hotels and leisure sector, real estate finance and property investment.
HR Wallingford, the independent civil engineering and environmental hydraulics organisation, has appointed David Rooke (right) and Geoffrey French (left) as non-executive directors. Rooke recently retired from the post of deputy- chief executive at the Environment Agency where he held high-profile roles, including executive director of flood and coastal risk management. He is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. In 2002, he was awarded the MBE for services to flood defence and the environment, and he was elected a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2013. French has been the chairman of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering, the president of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, and he was the 149th president of the Institution of Civil Engineers from 2013-2014. In 2015, he received a CBE for services to Civil Engineering.
Audit, tax and consulting firm RSM has appointed corporate finance specialist Maya Panova as an associate director in its Reading office. Panova has more than nine years’ experience in transaction support working with a wide variety of clients from owner-managed businesses to larger mid-tier and multinational groups. Her sector expertise is equally varied, including technology, engineering and business services.
An Oxford lawyer who specialises in advising businesses on their commercial and joint venture arrangements has been praised by a prestigious directory as one of the legal world’s leading individuals. Gayle Curry, a partner in the commercial services division at the law firm Blake Morgan, was given the accolade by the 2016 edition of The Legal 500 directory, which reviews the strengths of lawyers across the UK and recommends them based on how they are seen by clients and their peers.
Over the past year leading accountancy firm Whitley Stimpson, which has offices in Banbury, Bicester, Witney and High Wycombe, has recruited an additional 27 members of staff and five new trainees who will earn as they learn and acquire professional qualifications in a real-time work situation. Berkshire-based law firm Gardner Leader, is growing its ever expanding commercial team. Four more solicitors have been recruited, spanning employment, commercial litigation and international arbitration, corporate law, and commercial property, bringing the commercial team to 13. Senior associates Michelle Morgan and Violetta Falla (pictured) have joined along with solicitors Matthew Adamson and Tim Blackman. Morgan and Adamson will be based in Maidenhead, and Falla and Blackman will work from the Newbury office.
