Taking care of the environment for future generations is one of the most important contributions any business can make.

Winner: Peter Brett Associates

A Reading-based independent practice of engineers, planners, scientists and economists, delivering major development and infrastructure projects. It works in partnership with its clients and suppliers to deliver sustainable outcomes that make a positive contribution to the built and natural environment.

The judging panel overview

The judges were looking for strong leadership in sustainability and waste management, cost and energy savings, innovation in performance or design, and for great examples of employee engagement.

“Our winner has a companywide commitment to the environment, and epitomises ‘green progress’ in everything the company and its employees achieve,” announced Andrew Malone, operations director of integrated waste management and environmental services supplier, Grundon Waste Management.

A winning ‘green’ culture

Jonathan Riggall, equity director, environment and energy, at PBA explained: “We have an environmental management system throughout our business, which everybody buys into on work projects, and that system is reflected within our own organisation, where we have a whole range of environmentally-led initiatives.”

He exampled vastly improved energy efficiency through solar panel installation, generating more energy than PBA’s offices can use. Electric car charging ports, showers and changing facilities, have encouraged employees to use alternative means of green transport, so reducing work-travel impacts.

Does being ‘green’ actually help the bottom-line? “Yes. Becoming resource efficient – using less materials, water and energy – can save a significant amount of money. We know that from our own experience and from helping clients adopt environmentally aware approaches.”
