ActionCOACH sponsors Management Team of the Year Award

Awarded to the best management team that has driven its business forward using knowledge and creative ideas while developing strong leadership and teambuilding skills.

Winner: Xtrac

Continuing to expand its ever-successful motorsport and automotive business, Xtrac has recently launched a number of high-tech, but low-cost/higher- volume projects. Produced by its 310 employees and large supply chain, predominantly Thames Valley based, such projects are for customers including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin and McLaren.

The judges’ comment

Business coach Rob Pickering of ActionCOACH revealed the judges acclaim of Xtrac.

“A business with a global reputation. Many of its senior management team started as engineering apprentices and worked their way up, and the company continues to grow while retaining the cornerstones of its values – honesty and integrity.”

Skills that make winners

Peter Digby, chairman of Thatcham-based Xtrac, wondered if those who talk about a skills shortage, had done anything to resolve it. “We take on four undergraduates, four apprentices every year – training them the Xtrac way, so they have our DNA from the start.”

In general Xtrac promotes from within the company. “The very first apprentice we took on 23 years ago, now heads up our US service operation. I have just expanded our whole team by promoting 10 senior managers, and recently handed over the MD role to Adrian Moore, previously our technical director.”

Why promote from within? “We maintain a very strong engineering background. We need to understand the product, the customers, the automotive and motor- racing sector.”

Thomas International – The global champion for developing people, teams and cultures using psychometric tools and solutions throughout business, sport and education.
