QF Focus Magazine Television is (un)dead
Firstly, this is NOT an article about how TV rots your brain and turns you into a zombie! For British expats, one of the things they miss from home, the most is their UK TV channels, but in the age of the internet and mobile devices, is the television set dying?
There are a number of services around that offer UK TV channels but some people are choosing to use applications on their mobile device that
let them watch TV or movies, leaving their 40” flat screen TV to collect dust while they huddle round a 8-inch tablet.
If only there was a way to display the content from your tablet on your TV... Fear not! There are some systems you can use to watch TV and movies on a mobile device and display it on your home TV!
MHL (Micro USB to HDMI) MHL is a system for connecting a mobile device to your TV with a cable from the Micro USB connector on your device to an HDMI connector on your TV. Unfortunately the MHL system is only supported by a few devices (and not at all by Apple devices), and involves you having a cable running across the room.
Chromecast A Google Chromecast is a small device you connect directly to the HDMI port on your TV, as well as a power source, and it connects to your WIFI. You can then “Cast” content from your WIFI connected mobile device to the Chromecast to be displayed on your TV. Many popular apps, including YouTube, Spotify and many others, have built-in casting support. On Android devices (sorry Apple users!) there are a few specific applications that let you cast live TV and movies to your Chromecast for free!
