A View From

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up.

As usual after a year of 'Viewing' ...I have once again in celebration of Christmas decided to present my 12 Wonders of the season.

1. As I wandered around Quesada I had to wonder at the sight of several up turned skips placed outside a restaurant... what is going on thought I? A while later I read in a local paper that the skips were placed due to an outstanding dispute between two parties. Now I spent several years as a Union Official and have to admit that the idea of "parking the unions tanks on the managements lawn" was always an option I considered during disputes... however the art of negotiation usually prevailed. Why has negotiation not been used in this case?

2. Having recently moved home from the outskirts to the centre of a Spanish town I do wonder at the sound of the local church bells peeling their tribute to the people of the town.

At this special time of year the bells seem to carry an important message of hope.

3. It's all history now but I did have to wonder at the "political motive"of the Director of the FBI when several days before the American presidential election he decided to throw a spanner into the election process by once again raising the issue of Hilary Clinton and the email saga. A clear case of political meddling by someone who should know better.

4. I have always wondered and marvelled at the British National Health Service. I have also wondered and marvelled at the work ethic and the skill level of the NHS staff. After a year of political meddling I do wonder at the motives and competence of the Health secretary Jeremy Hunt. Hopefully in the near future I will not have to wonder why the NHS has been privatised.

5. I sat in my favourite bar/restaurant recently and had to wonder as a family of six came into the restaurant and sat at a table to order a meal. Meal ordered every one of the six people... two adults and four children pulled out a mobile device and commenced clicking, prodding and tapping said devices. Not a word was spoken between them. I wonder what is happening to families.

6. A very angry wonder is why have the people from FIFA decided to get involved in the British Poppy Remembrance Day. The Poppy is a symbol of commemoration to all those people who gave everything for others during and after two World Wars. To label a Poppy as a political symbol shows a crass misunderstanding of the poppy's symbolism. Quite simply FIFA should keep out of such sensitive matters ...a poppy is a reminder of the dignity, honour and the memory of people who gave for others.

7. On a sporting wonder theme... Is it only me or do other people wonder at the football commentary of Glenn Hoddle.
