If you’re tempted to simply install a new and unfamiliar— and possibly intimidating—piece of equipment and hope people like it, don’t do it! Exercise equipment is a substantial $7,000 to $10,000 outlay per piece, so make a big deal of it to get your best return on investment. Create a solid implementation plan to generate excitement and traction. Here’s how:

1. Look to the equipment manufacturer or dis- tributor for training and education opportuni- ties for your staff. Include all staff members, not just the fitness department. With all of your team up-to-date, when members ask the front desk person about the new equipment she will be confident saying, “It’s really fun and re- ally challenging. I tried it last week, and I know you’ll love it.”

2. Plan a launch day, and create a party atmo- sphere: place the new piece front and centre in the gym for high visibility (if only temporarily); attach balloons to it to attract members’ atten- tion; station a staff person nearby to give dem- onstrations and provide assistance; and pro- vide draw prizes or giveaways for everyone who gives it a try.

Life Fitness Life Fitness Flexstrider Variable-Stride Trainer The FlexStrider Variable-Stride Trainer lets exercisers change stride length on the fly and choose a workout that feels the most natural. The elliptical motion closely mimics a natural jogging stride for a smooth total-body workout. Users can find their perfect stride length between 0 – 36 inches and change it on the fly. With the oversized pedals, users can adjust foot position comfortably. Narrow pedal spacing (2.5"/6.3 cm) minimizes lateral hip shiſting, which reduces lower back stress. The smooth motion of the variable-stride trainer makes it easy to use and inviting for exercisers looking for a total-body, low- impact workout. 3. Promote the launch consistently in all of your marketing pieces, e.g., your newsletter, in-club television ads, on your social media channels, etc.

4. Remember that consumers are always more interested in benefits than features. In all mar- keting, highlight the equipment’s calorie-burn- ing, glute-strengthening, flexibility-promoting, etc., qualities to show how it can enhance their current exercise routines.

5. Create classes that incorporate the equip- ment, and include it in circuit training work- outs, boot camps, and small group and personal training. Encourage your personal trainers to include it in every new program they design, when appropriate.
