NEWS FOR & FROM MEMBERS OF DEVON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Make your mark on history

Members of the public and businesses will be able to see their names etched into history as ambitious plans to build a multi-million pound robot boat to mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower out of Plymouth take another step forward. The team behind the Mayflower Autonomous Ship have launched a

Crowdfunding campaign which will offer, among many other rewards, the chance to put individual names as well as those of businesses on the side of the ship when it is built. The ship will be the 21st Century version of the Mayflower and be able to sail

without crew from Plymouth UK to Plymouth, USA in 2020 on the 400th anniversary of the first sailing. To get the design from blueprint to boatyard, organisers need to raise

£300,000 for the crucial next design and development stage which will include robust wave tank scale-model testing. In order to help make that happen, everyone is being offered the chance to

get their name written into history as ‘new pilgrims’ by buying a reward that will literally make their mark on the project. For £20 you can put your name on the boat; for £50 you can put your family’s name on it and for £35 you can put two names and a significant date. Businesses will be able to get involved in spectacular, exclusive, sponsorship rewards which will include invitations to VIP events, invitations to the launch, getting their logo on the side of the boat and many other prestigious offers. The launch of the Mayflower Autonomous Ship out of Plymouth

as the flagship of the Mayflower 400 celebrations will cement the city’s reputation as a global centre of marine excellence and a marine science hub. It will be the first vessel of its kind to sail without captain or crew across the Atlantic and be able to conduct scientific research around the world. The MAS will be built in Plymouth and the South West.

The team behind the project, a collaboration between Plymouth submarine builder MSubs, Plymouth University and charitable marine research foundation Promare, is currently looking for suitable locations.

Changing the world, one TEDMED conference at a time

Beacon Medical Group and Devon Chamber of Commerce are hosting TEDMED Live 2016 on 2-3 December 2016 at the Plymouth Science Park. Tough-minded sceptics and visionary dreamers agree on one thing: if we

are going to change our world for the better, we must first imagine new possibilities. TEDMED is a unique event where every attendee feels inspired for every single minute of the event.

Plymouth Culture has been awarded funding for the development of visual arts programme ‘Horizon’. Starting in November 2016, the two-year Horizon programme will develop four major arts festivals and events, support a talent development programme for artists and visual arts producers, and will enable communities to commission visual artworks. Led by Plymouth Culture, Horizon is

a collaborative programme developed between Plymouth University, Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth Arts Centre, KARST, Plymouth City Council and Visual Arts Plymouth.

Sniffer dog lends a nose to raising awareness of drugs

A police trainee sniffer dog has been in operation at a Devon-based training centre in a ‘zero-tolerance’ approach to drugs. Skills Group, which runs

apprenticeship schemes across the West Country, has invited Devon and Cornwall Police to carry out random visits as a deterrent to any drug use and to help raise awareness of the dangers of drugs. The initiative has a two-pronged

approach: to educate and raise awareness about the health implications associated with drugs as well as the impact they can have on the working environment.
