TALKING BUSINESS Celebrating 10 years of Drake Circus in Plymouth

GREG LUMLEY, Centre Director for Drake Circus shares the secrets to the centres success, and the plans for the future.

Tell us a bit about Drake Circus? This year Drake Circus is celebrating its tenth anniversary, which was marked in October with a weekend of celebrations. As an award-winning shopping centre, and the South West’s leading shopping centre, it’s good to mark the occasion of the tenth anniversary and look ahead to the future. Over the past ten years, the centre has welcomed over

180 million people through its doors to shop and enjoy the centre’s varied retail, food and drink offer.

What do you consider to be the centre’s greatest achievements to date? It’s fantastic to be celebrating ten years of success at Drake Circus. It’s been a brilliant decade and we’ve attracted some top high street and local retailers. In the past five years since I’ve been in post, we’ve created more sustainable employment, engaged with the local community and generated real economic growth for the city. In the past five years, we’ve tried to grow the centre

further in terms of brands and have attracted Apple, Cath Kidston, White Stuff, Fat Face and Joules on top of some great new food and drink brands such as Ed’s Diner and Yo Sushi. Drake Circus has gone a long way to bring in brands to help attract other brands to the city and will continue to work to attract more brands to drive Plymouth further as a shopping destination. Drake Circus is part of the wider Plymouth offer and is

actively involved in supporting the city. I have an active role in this in supporting both the Plymouth City Centre and Destination Plymouth.

How do you work to support the wider community? The centre is a supporter of a number of projects with a range of community events throughout the year, support of the Mayflower 400 commemorations and our commitment to charity fundraising. Over the past five years we’ve helped raise over £150,000 for local charities, supporting the wider community in which our staff and our customers live and work.
