Trek to the Pole inspires students

Devon business

offers vital support An Exeter business has donated funds for essential building work at Child Hope Ministries, an orphanage in Uganda, as it helps put a roof over the heads of the charity’s growing number of vulnerable children. Devon Contract Waste connected with the

charity three years ago. Since then, the business has helped Child Hope Ministries founder Joram Muwanguzi develop a business plan, construct a school, employ a teacher, and cover rent while land for a new larger children’s home was purchased. Donations have so far exceeded £5,000.

Antony Jinman, a polar adventurer from Plymouth, has used his live expeditions to bring polar science to life in classrooms across Devon and Cornwall. The success of these expeditions has led Antony to realise the same could be done across any profession, not just polar science. This is how new Devon Chamber member, Liketobe, was developed, creating a network of professional people and businesses that teachers and parents can use to link education to the real world. Liketobe aims to reduce the percentage of young people who leave school not knowing

what they wish to do, by connecting pupils to the real world of work at a much earlier age. The company connects Devon business and industry into schools, with a particularly

focus on rural and deprived areas. To do this, Liketobe needs the help of professionals who share its passion and are motivated to help educate children across Devon in order to raise their aspirations and improve social mobility. Sir Ken Robinson, educationalist and international adviser, said: “Given the challenges we face, education doesn't need to be reformed - it needs to be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardise education, but to personalise it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they can discover their true passions.”
