Stuart Macrostie from IRT Surveys Ltd, has carried out over 4000 surveys in this area and we asked him about his experience:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your career? I am an experienced and qualified Thermographer working with the public and private sector. My core functions are using an infra-red camera and our own patented software in order to make energy visible and to highlight a buildings defects.
What is infrared thermography? Infrared thermography is the use of thermal imaging equipment to detect infrared energy emitted from an object; it then converts this information to a temperature and displays it in a colour coded image based on temperature distribution.
Why is it relevant to property owners? Although energy efficiency is the obvious answer, that is no longer the only application. Whether you are looking for defects such as missing or wet cavity wall insulation, leaks in flat roofs, potential electrical problems or wondering where your heat is escaping your building Infrared thermography can be used, it makes the invisible visible and is totally non- destructive.

What do you think are the key benefits? Infrared thermography is fast and cost effective; the images are easily understood. We always say that a picture is worth 1,000 words; thermal images allow you to see how the fabric of the building is actually performing. Once thermal colours are explained, you are able to see what is wrong with the building immediately and clearly.
