Could you be your Class Year Representative?

This year we would very much like to formalise a contact who is happy to act as a year representative for their particular class year.

If you are happy to make links between others in your year who might not have been in touch for a long time and assist with communication regarding reunions we would love to hear from you! We currently hold the below details. However we are looking for a volunteer representative for each year group. If you feel able to do this then please email Claire Ball on cball@mayfieldgirls.org.

LetterfromtheChairofGovernors I

t is as Chairman of Governors at Mayfield for the past 18 months (and an Old Cornelian myself) that I welcome you to the latest edition of The Old Cornelian. The School continues to work tirelessly to provide and enhance

links between alumnae of all generations. It is gratifying to know that as a result of these initiatives, more and more old girls are in touch with the School and many have attended Old Cornelian gatherings at School and elsewhere in the past year.

We are particularly encouraged by the growing interaction between Old Cornelians and the girls at School, with individuals agreeing to come and speak on careers, deliver Cornelia lectures, judge competitions and much, much more. Current girls relish this connection with alumnae and we thank all of you who have given of your time in this way. In addition, I know that some Old Cornelians based outside the UK have had the opportunity to meet the Headmistress, Antonia Beary, on her travels, with reunions recently arranged in Hong Kong, New York and elsewhere. We are proud of the global reach of our alumnae, and indeed of our current pupils, and further such gatherings will be organised in future. Of course many of you will be kept up to date on school and Old Cornelian news through social media and I congratulate Claire and the team, under the direction of our dynamic new Director of External Relations, Tessa Howard-Vyse, on their active engagement in this way.

1981 1986 1987

For those of us of a more ancient generation (including me!) for whom Facebook et al are as familiar as the far surface of the moon, the arrival of the annual magazine is perhaps all the more special, bringing as it does news of old friends, their careers, families and lots of interesting and inspiring stories. So far as the current School is concerned, it continues to thrive under the excellent leadership of the Headmistress, Antonia Beary and her team. The girls are kept busy with an impressive range of extra- curricular activities, in addition to the core business of studying. Public exams are under way as I write this, so I will not tempt fate by pre-empting this year’s results, but I can tell you that each and every girl will have been stretched to perform to her best ability, and we are confident of some stellar successes in a good range of subjects. Mayfield is frequently described as a happy school and I think that is vitally important in a world which seems to become ever more ruthlessly competitive.

If we can send our leavers out into that globally competitive world as self-confident, rounded and humane young people, they will be well placed to cope and to make their mark on society thereby swelling the ranks of the stalwart band of Old Cornelians of whom we are all so proud. The articles which follow show the vast range of careers and experiences of our fellow Old Cornelians; what is so striking is the proportion that have left school determined to make a positive contribution to the world. Cornelia Connelly would indeed be proud of this legacy.

Finally, you may like to know of two recent appointments to the School’s Governing Board: Rhona Lewis (Martindale, OC 1966) and Marion McGovern (Deputy Head and Acting Head at Mayfield, 1989-2010), whom many of you will have known. Their wide experience and counsel will be greatly valued.

With my very best wishes to all Old Cornelians.
