Charlotte McKee (Class of 2009) I have had quite a number of Highly Commended awards with the National Photographic Society with my animal portraits but have always wanted to achieve a gold award which I finally managed with one of my equine images at the beginning of this year. The awards are spread out over various photographic categories but only a very few gold awards are given out each time.
At Easter I returned to Mayfield to teach at Spark Camp and really enjoyed my time there - I was hugely impressed with how much the kids all learnt. I focussed mainly on studio flash techniques and photography using an SLR, getting the lighting right and creating an artistic picture by using your camera settings. I had two groups aged between 8-11 and by the end of the week all of them were shooting unassisted in manual mode which I was amazed at.
Over the summer I am looking forward to continuing with my fine art animal photography (
http://xellephotography.co.uk/) and attending some big dog shows like Dog Fest with my trade stand. Then in October I am jetting off to do my first 6 month season as a cruise ship photographer working for Princess Cruises. This will involve living on the ship and taking and selling lots of pictures of the guests and ports. I’m really looking forward to the new challenge and getting to see some of the world!
Juliana Liu (Class of 2008) I was an active member of the kickboxing team in Mayfield. After leaving Mayfield, I went back to Hong Kong to continue studying Spanish and Fine Arts at the University Of Hong Kong. During this time, I found a passion for studying Spanish movies and so I applied for a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media. I thought I wanted to be a director at that time.
Not long later, I met my boyfriend, Khasman, who had been running a business called Martial Arts Dance Club, aka "MAD"- a mixture of Martial Arts (all kinds- Qi kung, Thai boxing, Taekwondo) but he did not have a studio at that time.
Instantly, with my background, I started helping the business with designs, Martial Arts ideas and video shooting. The business went well and in 2015 we bought a studio and also we had our son, and we named him "KisMAD". I also launched my cafe there called "Terapia" (Spanish name meaning Therapy) serving Chinese fusion tapas.
Like Steve Jobs said, "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards."
Now when I look back on the old days in Mayfield, everything connects together to make me who I am today. So I would like to share this with Mayfield girls and hope to inspire them - to keep on doing what they are passionate about and eventually, they will get there.
Ajiri Ubogu (Class of 2003) Since leaving Mayfield in 2003, I went on to complete my undergraduate degree at the University of Surrey and then my post-graduate degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies UoL. In January 2009 I moved to Washington D.C where I worked in the international development and humanitarian sector for a number of years for several US-based and International development organisations. In October 2015, I took an international post with a US-based non-profit working as a Project Manager based in Dakar, Senegal on a Nutrition-led Agriculture Food Security project.
