Cornelians’ NEWS
Elizabeth Gallagher (Class of 1973) I am retiring from trying to instill an appreciation of mathematics in young minds. Teaching young people, instilling an appreciation of the power, the beauty, and just total wonder of mathematics, has been a most fulfilling life.
From June on I shall dedicate myself to being creative, wherever that takes me. I am really excited. Retirement is a great thing.
Anouska Mercado (Class of 2008)
I am working as a small animal vet in London for a charity called PDSA. It is the UK's leading veterinary charity with 51 hospitals across the country, treating more than 470,000 pets a year. The people that come to us are often suffering financial hardship and don't have anywhere else to go with their pets, so we offer free treatments and care to their animals, and we rely solely on their generous donations and the donations of our supporters to continue this work. I joined the PDSA straight from my 5 years training at vet school, and in my almost 3 years of working, have gained so much experience from my time here. The opportunities it has given me, both clinically and non clinically are fantastic.
Being a member of a charity, we are all dedicated to raising our awareness and also educating people on pet health. Through media opportunities we can do this, and you may see our new TV adverts out at the moment as well. I have been lucky enough to be asked by our PR team to help get our message out there and have been involved in some radio and other TV events.
I was asked to go on This Morning to help launch the PDSA Pet Fit Club, which like the Biggest Loser - but for portly pets! 13 pets have made the final, and will be dieting with the help of PDSA staff for 6 months, and at the end of this, whoever has lost the most weight relatively will be crowned the Pet Fit Club Champion!
Sarah Leach (néeDobson, Class of 1968) I always enjoy meeting up with school friends and cannot believe that it will soon be 50 years since we left Mayfield. Helen de Naurois (néeMalone Lee), Susan Eccles (née Craib) and Mary Boardman (néeClarke) and myself went to the premier of Valerie Hope’s son’s film “45 Year” starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtney. We are all meeting again soon with Mary Taylor (née King).
Going on This Morning was very nerve racking, especially because it is live! I arrived early in the morning and had my hair and make up done (a rare occurrence as I'm normally looking quite frazzled at work!) and then 2 of the pet finalists and I went on to chat with Phil and Holly about the growing problem of pet obesity. Once we got into the interview I relaxed and I really enjoyed it - as did the animals with their 5 minutes of fame! It was great fun meeting Phil and Holly and they were lovely and very friendly. I'm not sure if there's any other media opportunities on the horizon for me, but it was definitely an enjoyable change from the normal day to day! I love my job and how varied it is, and count myself very lucky to do it.
Mayfield Ceramicist shortlisted for the 2016 Saatchi Gallery / Deutsche Bank Art Prize
Abbie La Rooy (Class of 2015) An A Level piece by Abbie La Rooy was shortlisted from over 22,000 works of art from 54 different countries for the 2016 Saatchi Gallery/Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools.
Abbie’s raku-fired clay work, the ‘Cornish Landscape’, was amongst only 20 shortlisted pieces to be exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, London in March. Abbie, who is in her first year of an Art Foundation degree at Brighton University, went on to add: “I created the three vessels as my A Level final piece so I obviously have the whole Ceramics Department to thank for their endless help and patience! The piece was inspired by a trip to the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in Cornwall along with the slab-building method James Oughtibridge uses in his work.”
Mayfield Head of Ceramics, Tim Rees‐Moorlah, said: "It is a huge honour for Abbie to be selected from so many applicants from across the world and we are delighted by her achievement. I am sure Abbie will continue to receive recognition for her work as she progresses through her Career."
Anna McGarry (Class of 1993) I am delighted to be returning to the UK after two years setting up a flagship school in the UAE as a sister school to Cranleigh. I am taking up a post at Prior's Field School in Godalming and am excited about being back in the South of England. I return with my husband and two boys aged 9 & 10 who are all musicians and sports nuts. There is never a dull moment in between drums, trombones, trumpets and singing and we are looking forward to rugby in the rain!
Get in touch if you are in the area I would love to see any OCs. 26
Patti Quintana (Class of 1995) Just moved back south to Brighton after 13 years in Peterborough, it's great to be near family again, love my nieces and nephew. Best thing I've ever done is go travelling for 18 months - though this seems a distant memory now!
