CareerBreakPeople

After leaving Mayfield, I studied Chemical Engineering at Imperial College and started my engineering career with Esso. I was involved in a number of projects, notably the impact that changes in fuel specifications were having on fuels blending and production. After five years, I took a long career break to have a family.

I have always felt strongly that it should be possible to take extended career breaks and subsequently return to work. Eight years later my husband and I set up BRAVE Partners (a niche investment bank specialising in energy and insurance) and last year, once the boys were older, I founded CareerBreak People.

CareerBreak People provides support, activities and guidance throughout an extended career break to help people maintain the confidence, skills and knowledge that will make life transitions easier. In life we are always learning, growing and developing and on a career break people continue to develop new skills ‐ the key is to recognise this and seize opportunities along the way. The emotional intelligence and voluntary experience gained whilst on a break are great assets to an individual and should be fully recognised.

Before a break, CareerBreak People helps with preparation to leave work. During a break we offer a range of activities including regular keep in touch sessions and Pondero Pilates for the Mind regular series of talks. There is also the opportunity for people to earn flexibly with our Fresh Pair of Eyes sense check service. Towards the end of a break, using our own toolkits and working with LifeForward Coaching we help to establish personal goals and renew career direction.

In addition to identifying additional training needs and potential contacts, CareerBreak People can provide risk free opportunities for people to hone their interview skills or presentation techniques. We work with people across all disciplines to get them into the starting blocks for their next steps.

The Pondero Pilates for the Mind series has proven to be very popular in Winchester and we have seen topics as diverse as psychology of change, archaeology, website design, energy, nutrition and EU/Brexit. Inspired by this, I also ran two parallel series in Guildford with Cally Burch (nee Adams, class of ’88). I am now offering franchises in Pondero Pilates for the Mind and would love to hear from anyone who is interested in running a series in their area.

The Old Cornelian SUMMER 2016

There is so much that CareerBreak People has to offer that it is difficult to narrow it down to a few points in a short article. Please do get in touch if you are about to start or are on a career break and would like to find out more. I would also welcome hearing about the career break experience of OCs – please do email me or pop in if you are in the Winchester area.
