Evolution5, the Southampton-based construction consultancy, has appointed Chris Burnell as head of cost management and leader of the cost consultancy team. He will be responsible for expanding the customer base in the residential, industrial, commercial, and healthcare sectors, and the company’s work with schools and universities.
Romsey-based consulting civil and structural engineering company WFBA has promoted three of its established engineering team to technical directors. Clinton Lee (left) from Bournemouth has been a project engineer then principal engineer during his 15 years with WFBA. Winchester steelwork specialist Philip Reynolds (centre) has held similar roles over the same period. Steve Hollick (right), from Salisbury, has 10 years’ experience with the company, specialising in the draughting side of the business and expanding BIM capability to meet client demands.
Fresh Relevance, the marketing hub for online retailers based at the Southampton Science Park, has promoted David Henderson (pictured), who led the development team at the firm’s global head-office in Southampton, to chief technology officer. Pete Austin, co-founder of the company, will take up the new position of chief innovation officer.
Dorset businesswoman Lia Martin has been appointed as the new director of corporate partnerships at A-One Insurance Group. Her new role will include business development, customer-service liaison, brand management and marketing for the group alongside her new directorship. She is also the chair and director of Westbourne Business Association and a director of the Bournemouth Coastal BID.
Southampton Solent University has awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Technology to Guillaume Verdier, the Internationally renowned naval architect and yacht designer. He designs offshore racing boats for single-handed races – Open 60s, Class 40s or offshore large trimarans for single- handed races round the world. The principal naval architect of Emirates Team New Zealand, he has been involved in three America’s Cup campaigns and is the designer of the catamaran double-winner of the Mini America’s cup skipper Franck Camas.
Accountancy, investment management and tax group Smith & Williamson has promoted Jamie Lane to a directorship at its South Coast office in Southampton. Lane started out as a trainee accountant at the firm 13 years ago and qualified in 2006. He has worked in assurance and business services with a varied audit client base, ranging from recruitment businesses to boat builders. Lane said: “One of my key objectives as a director and part of our national team will be to continue to develop our local transaction services.”
Professor Margaret Ross MBE of Southampton Solent University has been named as one of Computer Weekly’s most influential women in IT. The top 50 women are all industry leaders and role models for women looking to break into what is still seen as a predominantly male- dominated industry, with recent research by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills revealing that only 26% of significant digital positions are held by women.
