OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION

Winner: Graham Holland
This last award was a surprise for an individual at the end of a highly enjoyable occasion for everyone. It also presented something of a conundrum.
While the finalists were all well-known on the South Coast, the winner was as yet unknown in the room.
The judges wanted their winning personality to be “a stand-out person who has been an outstanding success in their sector, but more importantly been involved with the promotion of the South Coast as one of the best places to live in and do business in.”
There were three worthy contenders: • Michael Green, lead director JLL
Always knowledgeable and highly regarded within the sector, Michael Green was University of Southampton educated and joined Jones Lang LaSalle in 1995 to become lead director at JLL’s Southampton office. In recent years, aligned with JLL’s ambitious regional expansion plans, Green has continued to significantly strengthen his Solent team, which offers companies advice on any aspect of commercial leases, property valuations, planning and development.
• Graham Holland, head of office, Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH)
Having achieved chartered surveyor qualification in 1975, Graham Holland is a Solent property man through and through. For 14 years, with colleague Chris Mitchell, he ran the successful Southampton- based Holland Mitchell firm, which merged in 2005 with Young & Butt of Fareham to create one of Hampshire’s largest firms of surveyors and commercial property agents. This year he celebrates his 10th year as LSH’s South Coast head of office.
• Nigel Walters, managing director, Troika Developments
Established in 1970, Poole-based Troika, led by Nigel Walters, focused its early years on developing industrial and warehouse

properties in the Poole locality. From the late1980’s the company became very active in project management – from idea to construction to occupation – of UK developments such as retail warehouses, retail parks, offices, restaurants, medical and leisure facilities. Solent region developments have included significant premises for Ageas Insurance, Sunseeker, Hamworthy Engineering, Lush Retail, Cobham, Westover Motors and several major investment and pension funds.
Gary Day, executive land and planning director of award sponsor McCarthy & Stone, specialists in construction and sale of retirement homes, announced the worthy winner as: Graham Holland.
Afterwards, Holland was justly proud, but stressed it was not trite to describe the award as ‘very much about the team.’
“Without my team we would not be doing the deals we do and getting the recognition we get. It’s a great joy to lead a team like mine, and nice to be recognised by my peers, and get a pat on the back from such people, many of whom I have known for many years. It gives you a very heartwarming feeling about yourself, your life and the region.”
Proud to be a South Coast resident – “I have lived in the New Forest for 34 years now. My family, head and heart is here” – Holland says he believes in contributing broadly from within the property sector.
Eleven years ago he started the annual Southampton Property Industry Touch-Rugby competition. “This year we had 16 teams, around 200 local people involved. It’s helping to bring property industry people together.”
Apart from his community governor roles at Southampton Solent University and a Southampton junior school, Holland, when local Roundtable chairman in 1992, began the November charity firework displays at Mayflower Park that annually raise £10,000-15,000.
