The culmination of our campaign is the Central South Mid Market Gala Dinner at the end of September and the announcement of the BDO Central South Mid Market Company of the Year
The three finalists were selected from nominations from the region’s professional community and more than 40 companies identified over the past 12 months as being the leading businesses in terms of international activity and profit growth. Dyer & Butler, R & M Electrical, and Portsmouth Aviation have been shortlisted for demonstrating all of the qualities that a successful mid-market company should have; the desire to innovate; to nurture talent; the willingness to adapt to new market opportunities; and the ability to achieve sustainable growth.
R&M Electrical Group was formed in Southampton in 1987 and has now become one of the largest independent electrical distributors in the UK. In addition to its electrical supplier capabilities it has specialist divisions encompassing a range of products and services.
The company has an international reputation for the supply of electrical equipment and services to the oil, gas, petrochemical, industrial, marine, pharmaceutical, rail, data centre and commercial sectors. Besides a number of specialist divisions and branches in the UK, R&M has overseas operations in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Iraq, Cyprus, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. Experienced in delivering on demand across continents, it exports to over 75 countries and 50% of its income is derived overseas.
The success story of R&M is more remarkable when you consider that all of its growth has been achieved organically, a testament to the management and loyal 200-strong team. Despite difficult market conditions sales grew by 17% in 2015/2016 and turnover is currently in excess of £75m.
In recent years R&M has diversified further with the introduction of lighting design and fixings divisions, the latter developing unique software solutions for the offsite prefabrication used in the data centre and construction markets. The company continues to look for new opportunities on a global basis.
Dyer & Butler was formed in 1979 and today the company operates through established regional offices across England and Wales employing locally recruited staff and labour where possible.
The company undertakes a variety of civil engineering and building works, in both the public and private sectors, covering a wide range of construction disciplines and types of project.
It has significant framework and partnership contracts with Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, Network Rail, London Underground, numerous councils, the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales. In recent years, Dyer & Butler has won an increasing number of these, evidence that its clients recognise and appreciate the supportive, collaborative, flexible and value-for-money service it provides.
In addition to having the organisation, skills and experienced staff to undertake large contracts, the company also maintains small, flexible teams who are able to integrate with clients and provide an ongoing service on smaller work packages. Dyer & Butler continue to adapt to meet the ever changing nature of both the industry and client requirements.
Portsmouth Aviation is a family owned, specialised precision engineering company, with over 85 years’ experience. It offers engineering solutions and innovation, whether “build to print” or managing the whole design, accreditation and build process for both an established customer base and new clients around the world.
Over the past four years, significant investment has been made in buildings, plant and training, plus the acquisition of a packaging facility, all of which has enabled the company to focus continued commitment to delivering quality products and services.
