WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT
Sponsored by
Winner: The White Building Southampton
Arguably, 21st century workers no longer go to a place of work, they go to a place where they will enjoy working.
In this second award category the judges were looking for companies that used their property strategy to create new working styles, innovative new practices and actually made great working spaces for their employees.
The three shortlisted finalists were:
• Lakeside North Harbour Business Campus, Portsmouth
• The White Building, Southampton
• The University of Southampton Science Park (USSP)
Lakeside is an attractive landmark environment visible from the M27. It is highly accessible with ample parking, and internally provides modern accommodation for varying business requirements. Campus facilities range from waterside wildlife walks to a retail square containing ‘high street name’ stores, a day nursery to regular community activities. Communication and user feedback are key aspects maintaining Lakeside occupier satisfaction. It was the first business campus with its own app – Destination Lakeside – has a YouTube channel and active Facebook and Twitter sites.

Link House Investments and Ashville Asset Management recognise the staff wellbeing and productivity values of a good workplace environment. While redesigning, refurbishing and rebranding The White Building office premises they introduced a stylish high-profile reception, a café zone, touchdown, social and collaborative areas, plus formal breakout, meetings and boardroom facilities. Ceilings were raised to boost space and light, large opening windows provided, shower/ changing facilities and a secure bike station to encourage a healthy workforce. Design-inspired contemporary decor and furnishings completed the transformation.
From young businesses to international companies, USSP provides an environment designed to promote commercial progression, company growth, and a workspace in which the creative power of like-minded people is harnessed in a collaborative and social atmosphere. Its incubator space, multi-use laboratories, and ‘grow-on’ office premises are set within a relaxing Hampshire area of outstanding natural beauty. Community feeling at the Science Park is carefully nurtured, assisted by user feedback, networking CEO breakfasts, and The Club health complex and Lattes coffee shop facilities.
Michael Green, head of office in Southampton for sponsors JLL, was invited onto the stage to announce the winner.
Teasingly he announced the winner as “a workplace environment that businesses say they are proud to occupy” before naming the recipient – The White Building, Southampton
Afterwards, Ashville Asset Management director Gareth Edwards was a very proud award recipient. “This means a lot for our business. We have been going a long time, under the radar without too much publicity, and it is fantastic to be recognised for all the hard work our team does.”
Also speaking on behalf of Link House Investments, Edwards explained that workplace development today is very much about creating an attractive environment that will sell itself to employees as much as their employers.
Understanding the modern workplace market, being prepared to think differently, was crucial. “In millennial workplaces people want to work somewhere where they want to be. They won’t go to the standard office environment. If you want to attract the best talent in the area you have to provide a building where they want to be.”
