FAST RISING PROPERTY BUSINESS
Sponsored by
Winner: MC Plan & Site Services
The next category saw the inaugural South Coast Property Awards recognising a rising star in the property field – highlighting successful and growing property entities now making their mark either in the commercial or residential sectors.
The shortlisted nominees were: • MC Plan & Site Services • Mildren Homes • The Mortgage Hut
Founded by Mark Cook in 2013, MC Plan & Site Services is an independent inspection company regulated by the Construction Industry Council to carry out building control throughout England and Wales. Cook’s 25-year industry experience, notably with the NHBC and Local Authority Building Control, has led to a high volume of instructions for a growing nine-strong staff and a turnover rapidly rising to £550,000 last year. Technology has enabled growth. MC Plan & Site Services has developed its own bespoke systems to assist its surveyors, clients and administration.
Established in 2010, “quality, workmanship and attention to detail” form the basis of Mildren Homes’ core values. Turnover has grown from a standing start to £39 million in five years. “Attention to modern
day living” helps differentiate Mildren’s homes and services, and roughly 80% of its properties are sold or reserved ‘off plan’. A house is only as good as its foundations: Mildren Homes invests in its staff creating a true sense of family, and within its local site communities.
Begun in 2011 by Chris Schutrups with only £10,000, The Mortgage Hut is a pioneering independent mortgage broker with 21 employees, using an innovative approach to technology to set it apart from its competitors. The company is on course to pass the £1m turnover milestone this financial year. Profits are expected to more than double within the year. Schutrups has put a number of partnerships in place to support a detailed business growth plan, and is already eyeing a potential acquisition.
Julie Mutton, assurance and business services partner of sponsor Smith & Williamson the advisory firm with a strong property and construction focus, revealed the fast-rising star and title-winning company – MC Plan & Site Services.
Afterwards, MC Plan & Site Services founder Mark Cook said: “We’re absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award. The past few years have seen the business grow

by 600%. It’s been better than we could possibly have imagined.”
He was quick to praise his ‘wonderful’ team, which provides skill, drive, creativity and “also knock years off me.”
With the award, the MC Plan & Site Services team had double cause for celebration, having just moved into newer and larger offices in Poole, “to accommodate our growing staff to service all the work we are receiving,” explained Cook.
“We started from our dining room, then had a very small office in Poole, and actually moved again yesterday. It’s just been an amazing journey,” added wife Helen.
Mark Cook gave up his Bournemouth Borough Council building inspector role aged 46, having seen the opportunity for his MC Plan & Site Services business to assist the construction industry.
The Cooks sold their motorhome to enable him to gain extra qualifications, then their home to set up the business. “We moved into a shack, literally started with a pound each.”
He had no work for six months, but finally networking and persistence paid off. “Getting that first work at Southbourne Overcliff Drive, job number MC2013-001 felt amazing. It’s about job MC2013-3,500 now.”
