HOUSEBUILDER OF THE YEAR
Sponsored by
Winner: Inland Homes
Next up came ‘Housebuilder of the Year’, a much sought-after award title – which was obvious from the atmosphere in the room as Tiff Needell introduced the four contenders on the shortlist:
• Bargate Homes • Inland Homes • McCarthy & Stone • Pennyfarthing Homes
Although only in its 10th year Bargate Homes has 1,000 building plots under its control from Salisbury to Alton, Southampton to Winchester. The Bargate ethos is to build the right homes in the right places, while taking responsibility for how its homes look and are used now, and in the future. This has led to individual and innovative design, sustainable construction, and a legacy of far from standard new-build quality homes – and popularity that often sees Bargate developments completely sold off-plan.
A Buckinghamshire-based developer specialising in urban regeneration developments, Inland Homes has a growing portfolio of predominantly brownfield projects close to the South Coast. Sustainability and respect for the environment, quality work, good design and local community engagement are at the core of Inland Homes’ construction credo. Inland is currently working on major developments at Carters Quay in Poole, the Wessex Hotel and Keystone House in Bournemouth, and Meridian Waterside and Chapel Riverside in Southampton, plus growing involvements in Chichester.
2015 was the most exciting year in McCarthy & Stone history. It announced plans to double the size of its business, completed a record number of land exchanges, launched a new product range, and successfully returned to the FTSE 250 on the London Stock Exchange. In addition, company profit rose 40% to over £88 million,

and completions rose by 15%. McCarthy & Stone builds on brownfield sites to encourage social inclusion and community participation.
Over the past 40 years Pennyfarthing Homes of New Milton has been building in desirable locations along the South Coast. Known for its luxury, design and quality, Pennyfarthing has constructed a diverse range of properties from large detached family homes to apartments. Apart from the provision of new homes and local employment, a key company aim at its developments is also to enhance local communities – whether through urban rejuvenation, charitable support, or rural wildlife and heritage conservation.
Malcolm Wilson, director real estate finance at sponsors NatWest, came to the stage to reveal the winner – Inland Homes.
Stephen Wicks, chief executive of the company, was delighted with its new ‘Housebuilder of the Year’ title. “It has been a great team effort from a pretty small team actually.
“We are quite ground-breaking in going into regeneration schemes that help change the local environment, with some schemes big enough to change whole communities. We take derelict, often quite unpleasant locations, and turn them into really nice places to live.
“I am very proud to lead a great team undertaking two major challenging waterside regeneration projects in Southampton at present, and another in Poole, which are putting us on the map.
“The South Coast is very important to us because there are a number of regeneration opportunities that have been suggested, but not yet got off the ground.
“Inland Homes is getting a reputation for getting on with the job and carrying out regenerations rather than just talking about them. We are getting recognised for being ‘do-ers’, which is great.”
