WUGC 2016 - Feature

OFF THE FIELD

With Team Canada

Highlights, standings, broadcasts and real-time scoring is great but what really happens behind the scenes, off the field at a world championships. Players from our five national teams give us a little sneak peek at what life is like off the field.

OPEN MASTERS - Late night basketball with the “enemy”

One of the highlights of WUGC 2016 for me came in the middle of the night on Sunday, Jun 19. A few of us Canadians had gathered in our hotel lobby to watch game seven of the NBA Finals. Some of us decided to simply stay up late and deal with the lack of sleep, others went to bed at a decent hour and set their alarms for 12:55 AM. We were also joined by a group of South African open masters players. For the next three hours we watched basketball, cheered on our teams, chirped LeBron/Steph Curry and told stupid stories. Basically, we just did guy stuff that none of us really ever get to do anymore because life (families, jobs, frisbee, etc..) gets in the way. I’m sure some of you are saying “don’t you think it was a little irresponsible to stay up so late given that you had to play the next day?” To you I say “Don’t worry, we knew the South Africans would be just as tired.”
