Regional Update - Spring 2016 THE ATLANTIC Jeux de l’Acadie 2016
of ultimate players By JASON MURTY
Ultimate is gaining more awareness than ever before on the Canadian East Coast. In 2015, the game became an official sport in the Jeux de l’Acadie for teenagers under 15 years old. This multi-sport event offers an events for Francophones and Acadians from all over the Atlantics since 1979, where the participants celebrate their culture through different competitions. At the Jeux de l’Acadie, Ultimate is mixed-gender and in the format
of 5-on-5 with the offense setting two or three girls. The athletes get to discover and appreciate the self- officiating concept of the game and have a facilitator on the sidelines in case they need help with rules. The sport has already grown immensely for that age group, specifically for the intensity of the game and for the uncommon spirited attitudes. This year, the delegation of “Sud- Est” from New Brunswick won the gold medal at the competition,
represented by ninth graders from Moncton’s High School, Mathieu- Martin. This same team has been on a winning streak through their local league as well as winning the U18 N.B. High School Championships.
All of this development would not have been possible without the help of so many hard-working volunteers. Watch out Canada, the Atlantics are preparing a new generation of Ultimate players!
