QUEBEC Junior initiatives blossom in Quebec FQU Executive Director recap By NICOLAS

VANASSE

Québec is always

actively working on junior development. All around the

province, we see new highs school leagues starting up (Abitibi, Montérégie, Centre-du-Québec), bringing new coaches to the game. Our coaches are helping expand the game into new areas.

The FQU is starting some new coaching initiatives as well. Only time will tell if they are effective. Nonetheless, coach development breeds solid junior development so it is always important. There will be at least two one-week Ultimate day camps, one at University of Sherbrooke and the other in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

Montreal has assigned nearly two full-time employees this summer to give Ultimate clinics in day camps and community groups across the island, with the hope of starting four to eight city U15 and U12 leagues this fall.

The FQU is running a 5-on-5 mixed U18 provincial circuit. The first event was cancelled due to extreme weather, but 10 teams will attend the next three events. The average age for those teams is around 15-16. Some teams come from smaller ultimate communities, like Plessisville and Trois-Rivières who only have one hundred or less league players so fielding a junior team is a real success.

I am really proud of the leagues working together and putting the necessary funds into youth development. The workload is astronomic, but if everyone works towards the goal of bringing more youth the game, we’ll succeed faster and get more recognition from our municipal and provincial partners.
