Going Out - Page 44 Cooling the men with cakes
What an amazing day we had at the "DIVINO" open day at Rosie Woodham's lovely Finca on Thursday the 21st July, to support the Franciscan Men’s Shelter in Palma de Gandia. The theme of the day can be described as 'great things happen when we all work together'. The fantastic amount of 925.58€ was raised, and the generous donations from the guests were so great that we couldn’t get them all into the one car planned to go to the Shelter that same day.
Sue Faulkner, boss at Lenceria Susan and long-time Shelter supporter, started the 'Cool The Men' Go Fund Me appeal online, posted the appeal regularly, and mentioned this to Female Focus, which was the catalyst that means so many people are now aware of the Shelter and its needs. Helen King, a volunteer at the Shelter, was on hand on the day to answer questions about the Shelter, hand out leaflets and sell raffle tickets. Two weeks before the event we knew that we had enough funds for the air-conditioning, so it was ordered and installed by Tecnielec Climatization Torrevieja. The units are up and working now and at an amazing price, fully guaranteed units and far less than the other quotes we received. There had been concern that the electric cost of running the air-conditioning would be prohibitive. The funds raised over and above what was needed for the air-conditioning will be spent on installing a solar water heating system to complement the existing system and hopefully reduce the electric bills.
Sue Birchenough of Reach Out Torrevieja drove up with a boot full of essential food items, milk, olive oil, dried pulses and more. Helen took what she could get in her car to the Shelter where Hermano Pepe said, 'so many great items thank you so very much'.
These thanks are for all of you, and also Female Focus for freely spreading the word about the event and the Shelter. The Facebook group is called 'Franciscan Shelter for Men at Palma de Gandia', please join for regular updates about the Shelter, current needs and any events. The people to thank are too many to list here so Helen sends sincere thanks to everyone who gave their time, money, goods and all three.
Would you like to become a groupie – you are never too old?
Recently many of the volunteers who help run groups and front of house at U3A Dénia monthly meetings etc. were invited to a lovely 3
course lunch to say thank you for giving their time freely to help make the U3A Dénia such a successful association with over 740 English speaking members. The annual membership fee is a very reasonable 6€ per year and gives access to over 37 activity groups including walking, travel, quiz nights, racketball, petanque and many, many more. We have recently been joined by three new group leaders offering Ukelele, music appreciation and Salsa/Latin dance classes and social evenings. If you are no longer in full time employment and you, or your partner, are over 50 years of age then please come along and join in the fun by joining one or more of our groups. You can view the list of groups available by going to the U3A Dénia website –
www.u3adenia.com – and clicking on ‘groups’. The days/times/venue for each group are displayed on the individual pages. To join please contact
membership@u3adenia.com you will be made very welcome.
