Groin Lift
It is common in the summer months that some men and women complain about soreness and irritations in the groin areas, especially between the legs. The heat, together with the perspiration and friction or rubbing
of the thighs, irritate the skin causing discomfort and which can lead to infections that further aggravate the problem and may spread to the surrounding skin.
The treatment in these cases will depend on the degree and characteristics of the problem. Mild cases will respond well to talcum or calamine powders (Talkistina). Moderate ones may require steroid creams like Betnovate or with anti- fungal agents (Brentan cream). In severe cases the use of oral antibiotics may be necessary. Therefore the best treatment is prevention.
It is important to mention that Lycra underwear is not absorbent, unlike cotton, so humidity remains over the area – this is the same as some bathing suits, hence the importance of changing after practising sports or swimming. Also certain clothes or even the rubbing of the skin on the thighs can cause irritation and in these cases it is better to wear light cotton underwear or leggings.
From the cosmetic point of view it can also be a case of embarrassment when summer arrives and we are forced to wear summer outfits; shorts, bathing suits or skirts. It is also a common complaint of people who, after
losing weight, find the skin of the area distended, with folds or stretch marks.
In both cases (for either medical or for cosmetic reasons) this can be solved with a rather simple operation called the groin- lift that consists in the removal of a moon shaped piece of skin from both inner thighs. The length of it will always depend on each patient but the main idea is to tighten the skin from the frontal aspect of the thigh to the back of the groin all around and under the buttocks. When needed fatty tissue is also removed so both inner aspects of the legs will no longer rub or cause irritation. Sutures are always sub dermal or intradermal and they will follow the natural folds of the skin so they will leave no visible scars, only a thin line covered by underwear. The procedure takes about two hours under sedation and local anaesthesia on one day surgery basis, so patients can go home straight away. The post- op is for about one week for the healing of wounds, plus another extra week before being able to resume normal activities. During these couple of weeks patients can carry on a normal life. The results are always satisfactory from the cosmetic point of view and are likely to be stable for a good number of years or even permanent.
