You may have noticed just how hot it’s getting. There’s no denying that with air-conditioning at home, life is simply more comfortable. After a while, it’s easy to take air-con for granted. But, air-con systems will and do need maintaining in order to function correctly and reliably. The main cause of failure of air-con systems is due to ‘gassing’ of the system. This can be due to leakage or even just old-age. We can re-gas or repair as needed.

The gas used in air-con systems is changing. The gas (R22) has been used reliably for over 40 years but is no longer available. The replacement gasses (R417a and R422d) are more ozone friendly and can be used instead without having to change compressor oils and filters. Some companies use a cheaper R407c gas but we get regular reports of damaged compressors, so we don’t use it! The R22 machines parts are obsolete now, so it’s now better to replace the machines. At MPH, we believe strongly in keeping up with the changes, and doing our bit for the environment. We are already using the new gas and can advise in all matters of re-gassing.

This leads on nicely to know when to re-gas your system. The most obvious symptom is that your room is still not cool with the air-con on. It’s a little cooler, but not as cool as you remember. This is possibly due to lack of gas pressure in the system - time for a re-gas. Another one is that you notice an odd smell which you can’t put your finger on! It may be the air- con! The thing here is that the air-con unit blows air, and the smell, all round the room making it difficult to locate. In this case, maybe a small leak is the culprit! The real killer is when the air-con unit simply won’t work. The internal sensor sees there’s little or no gas, and won’t allow the system to switch on. A simple re-gas could be the solution. So, if you’ve got air-con, and you want to stay cool this summer, and save money, it’s really worth calling Moraira Plumbing and Heating.
