Many of my suppliers do the hard work for you and their ranges are made up of mixes of carefully chosen fabrics that work perfectly together, displaying them so that you view the collection on one hanger or within one book.
This is a great starting point if you are looking to carry out a full makeover as you can choose individual fabrics from a collection to make up into curtains, cushions, bedspreads, headboards etc, etc.
However, if like many of my clients, you already have certain items that you don’t want to change; maybe your sofa is a specific colour, or you already have curtains in place and just want to add to the scheme, then the key is being able to find fabrics that will not only work with what you already have, but will add a vital zing that suddenly pulls it all together and gives you the WOW factor.
A neutral backdrop
If your current look is pretty neutral then you can go in 1 of 2 directions; keep with the neutral theme (there is nothing wrong with cream and beige for example) but add lots of texture to create interest: fabrics such as chenille or velvets, sateen with lots of sheen, chunkily textured jacquards, fur and leather are all good examples, alternatively you can use your neutral scheme as a backdrop to adding your favourite “colour of the moment” which, if you choose your coordinating items carefully, you can change simply and economically whenever the whim takes you.
A tying colour
If you are tied to a colour already, then finding fabrics that include this colour and /or complement it is the key to success. However, in order to accomplish this effectively, it is vital that you view any fabric choices in the room, alongside your current items, and in varying degrees of light before making your final choice.
