FF Costa Motoring The Costa Motoring... Your Car Questions Answered
We continue this month with a couple more important summer themed questions which we have been asked recently. Hopefully you may find the answers of some help however if you have any other questions then please get in contact with us. Between all of us here Javea Auto Sales, we have a wealth of knowledge of all things motoring and we will happily find the answers for you.
Q) Which is more fuel efficient, driving with the windows open or driving with the windows closed and the air conditioning on?
Answer:- Tests have proved that for the vast majority of cars, in most normal day to day driving, keeping the windows open and the air conditioning off will make your tank of fuel last longer and therefore be better for the environment. In the real world, we all need to be comfortable and of course your air conditioning system relies on internal lubricant to keep it functioning correctly. Try using a mixture of both options and that way you will save some fuel but still keep your air conditioning
fully functioning – the biggest waste of fuel would be to drive with the air conditioning on and the windows open!
Q) I have driven to Mercadona, locked my car up but noticed that the cooling fan is still running even though the engine is turned off, is this normal?
Answer:- Particularly in the summer months when your cooling system is working harder than at other times of the year, it is quite normal for the fan to continue running even when the car is switched off. Many modern cars will allow the cooling fan to run for several minutes so this is not unusual, if however the fan is running excessively (perhaps 15 minutes or more), then it may pay to get it checked out just in case you come back to a flat battery.
Q) I have noticed that there is water dripping underneath my car after I have parked it up, is this normal and how can I check that everything is OK ?
Answer:- When you use your vehicle’s air conditioning in the summer, condensation will form on the system (just like it does on the outside of a cold drinks can when you take it out of the fridge). This condensation will then often form a small pool of water under your car and is perfectly normal. So long as you are regularly checking your coolant level then you shouldn’t have any issues but you can always dip a clean white tissue in the liquid to check – if it is just pure water then the tissue should dry with no coloured residue. Again check with your mechanic if you are unsure.
I repeat again - don’t forget that in the summer months we must all be extra careful on our roads. We have many tourists here who are the lifeblood of our towns, please be aware that many of them may be driving on Spanish roads for the first time so try and be patient and give them plenty of space. We must all remember what it was like when we first went abroad and rented a strange car and had to drive in a strange place so please be considerate.
Finally, NEVER leave your pet unattended in a closed up vehicle or indeed one with the window left slightly open. If you are at all unsure as to what this feels like, try putting a fur coat on and sitting in your car to see just how quickly the temperature becomes unbearable.
Stay safe, have fun and don’t forget to come and see us when you are ready for your next car.
