www.female-focus.com Extra Portions - Montgo di Bongo - Jávea

Anyone who loves Jávea (which I think is or should be pretty much everyone) particularly loves the chiringuitos that pop up in the summer on the beautiful pebbled beach between the port and the parador, with its striking coastline of chiselled rock, uncluttered backdrop of sea and mountain views. For anyone who is anyone it seems the Montgo di Bongo is the place for that someone to go. When I interviewed owner, José, I asked him if he had any famous clients (yep, still trying to track down David Ferrer) he trotted out a long list of numerous Spanish

celebrities. None of whom I knew (although I should know who Pau Gasol is apparently) but I got the drift, and hey I hope José doesn’t know who Holly Willoughby is.

This place should rightfully be famous amongst the famous and the infamous, dare I say, as this paradise of a beach club is a real slice of Ibiza. And I do dare say that because I lived in Ibiza for many years and Ibiza does nothing better than uber-cool chiringuitos. With chill out music Café del Mar style, first line position, and a sense of being in a privileged private club, it feels like you have hopped on the ferry at the Montgo di Bongo.

Whatever mood your taste buds are in, M Di B can satisfy most tastes. Thai chicken curry, Marrakesh cous cous dishes, fresh grilled fish and steaks, a selection of snacks and of course Valencian or fish paella. For those of you Jávea aficionados, their second restaurant is the paella-famed La Masía de la Sal on Av. Mediterraneo Nº 182. They know what they are doing in their giant pans and can even do home deliveries (phone 96 646 3523).

I tried the Andalucian Salmorejo which is like gazpacho but thicker with hard boiled egg and serrano ham and I could happily eat that everyday. My daughter (who has very exotic tastes for a 6 year old unfortunately for her lazy-cook mother) got stuck into a delicious octopus a la plancha which provided us with a great photo for Facebook. Then we shared grilled fish rodaballo which was perfectly cooked and served with a generous salad and sliced baked potatoes with pimiento.

Fresh cocktails are masterminded by José’s son Ivan and Peter and their best sellers are mojito de coco, and strawberry daiquiris. We were treated to a fabulous piña colada served in a pineapple. Olivia only had one sip, mind. Well ok, two.

They do plenty of weddings and events at very economical prices by the way. And I can’t think of a better place for a wedding in Jávea. Shame I can’t think of anyone to marry really. A lovely setting with its Caribbean style coconut tree fringed umbrellas and all that sea to gaze at. The Montgo di Bongo is less closed in than the other chiringuitos and closer to the sea which I think makes it very special.

If you would like a good look around before you go then find them on google maps. And when you get there, if you have been good, save some room for the home made tiramisú or apple pie with nutmeg. Ten out of ten.
