Extra Portions - La Chica De Ayer - Denia By Fiona Jennison
Do you have mixed feelings about Karaoke? Yep, I do. I get that it brings much joy (especially to those who are annoyingly able to actually sing) and that many a hen party would be scratching around without it. But the party pooper part of me (ok, snob bit) thinks it might be a bit cheesey.

So let’s imagine a world where karaoke is not accompanying a machine and standing solo self- consciously on a slightly sad stage. Imagine a world where karaoke fulfils a childhood dream of having your own band, and singing your heart out with live professional musicians right next to you. Imagine a world where this takes place in a vibrant, well respected, very cool, beautiful and friendly music venue, slap bang in the centre of the city of Denia, yet that looks and feels like a stunning secret garden. (So all your friends turn up regardless of whether or not you sing like a strangled cat.)
Stop! In the name of love! (you are so lucky I am writing not singing) No need to imagine. Ladies and gents, La Chica de Ayer offers just this every Thursday night. Live band karaoke.
Forgive the pun, but I am going to wax lyrical about this place. I discovered the venue on a Sunday afternoon when I went to see my friend Niamh O´Sheehan doing an Irish influenced acoustic set with her guitarist. There was a real mixed audience who were all on their feet within half an hour so I’ve never looked back in terms of knowing where to be on a Sunday afternoon. Relaxing and uplifting at the same time. Kids are very welcome. NB Celtic Knot play once a month there, and every Sunday from 18 30 there are live sets from other acoustic bands.
The entrance and top floor is a trendily retro 80s themed bar, with many nods to the scooter world and other cool design concepts, and below this are two large terraces in the chill out garden. A classic turquoise Seat 600 sits very coolly in a tree, and yet window boxes of pretty flowers fledge all the seating areas. Beautiful wooden lighting makes it all very pretty.
And, appealing to all us Anglo Saxons, they are rightly famous for their gin and tonics. Prepared professionally to perfection. And if you also try the strawberry mojito you will have to put me on your Christmas card list.
As I write this, plans are on track for La Chica to launch a delicious menu of finger food by the first of July. I predict that this place will have bookings off the scale for birthdays and events
when they have their tasty food to combine with the great music and classy decor.
For younger readers, let me tell you that you can’t beat DJ Carlos Carmona for his funky dance, pop and electric pop sets on Friday and Saturday nights on the terrace, with more pop tunes upstairs. Be warned, you will not leave early. Tell your parents you are staying with a friend.
Finally, do introduce yourself to the team. Pau, Javier and Juri bring a lot of joy to a lot of people, perfectionists that they are. You will make many friends of all ages in this establishment.
Yep, get a bumper pack of Christmas cards this year. And get practising your version of I Will Survive. I am. It’s one way of getting my loved ones to go out for the evening and leave me in peace with Netflix.
