At Clinica Dental el Puerto we have a number of treatment options for tooth whitening. However, we thought it might be interesting to see how the process of tooth whitening came in to being.
We tend to regard tooth whitening as a fairly recent phenomena, but the actual practice of tooth whitening started with the ancient Egyptians about 4000 years ago. The ancient Egyptians prized white teeth as a sign of wealth and beauty. In order to achieve a whiter, brighter smile they created a whitening paste using ground pumice mixed with white wine vinegar. It probably did work to a degree but at the expense of eroding or abrading the enamel.
The ancient Romans used urine as a mouthwash and mixed it with pumice to create a toothpaste. The ammonia in the urine helped to lighten the teeth but it certainly was what you would call an acquired taste... We would not recommend it!
During the 17th century, the barber surgeons would file patients teeth down and then apply caustic nitric acid to them to make them whiter. Again, this whitened teeth but destroyed the enamel leading to greater susceptibility to tooth decay.
Moving more up to date, in 1968, Dr Bill Klusmier, an orthodontist in Arkansas, accidentally discovered tray tooth whitening. He was looking for a solution to help soothe inflamed gums which sometimes occur when patients wear braces long term. He told a patient to place an antiseptic gel in his orthodontic retainer overnight. When he reviewed the patient sometime later, he found that not only were his gums better but also his teeth were whiter too. This was the embryonic start of modern day tooth whitening.
Moving to the present day, we have a number of ways in which patients can now achieve the whiter, brighter smile that they desire. With summer most definitely here, we thought we would share the methods which we use at the clinic to achieve exceptional results for our patients.
