Can’t Sleep for the Heat by Lucy Rowat: The Bed Centre, Calpe

No matter how hard you try, the heat can make it impossible to sleep. Air-conditioning is great, but you wake up with a stuffy nose. Fans can work, but are noisy. What’s needed

is a scientific approach to managing heat whilst sleeping.

So in developing materials, where do you go? Well, NASA has been dealing with this issue throughout the manned spaceflight programme. In spacesuits, you need a fabric that can buffer temperature swings and maintain body temperature at optimum for working in space. Now transfer that technology to the bedroom and you have a range of products by Velfont® which will keep your body temperature at an optimal sleeping level, which means that it’s much easier to - well - sleep of course!

The range called THERMO- regualtor® includes pillows, pillow cases, mattresses and mattress pads, and even a memory foam type pillow. All are designed to be easy care and are manufactured with 100% cotton in conjunction with Outlast® Adaptive

Comfort® advanced material.

Velfont® THERMO-regulator products are available on the Costa Blanca from The Bed Centre which can be found just 1km outside Calpe on the Calpe-Moraira coast road. Or visit online www.thebedcentre.com.

Summer craft market in Javea port starts again

The summer craft fair in Jávea Port is back again. This is the fourth year running that Amata (the regional craft association) joins forces with the local shopkeepers to liven up the promenade along the sea front with a craft fair. A real craft fair, with “Artesanía de Autor®”, which means that what you see is made by the man or woman on the stall - nothing imported, nothing made by friends or in a small factory.

The stalls vary from week to week, offering a choice of original souvenirs: leather bags, leather belts, rag dolls, wooden toys and puppets, jewellery from silver, copper, ceramics, macramé or wrought iron, hand painted designer clothes and even some paintings and sculptures. Many of the people on the stalls will be working, and you can watch, or get them to add a name or a detail or, if you can wait a few days, get them to make something to order.

The fair opens from 7pm to midnight until 13th September (except for a few days when the locals celebrate their fiestas).

A visit to the market can be combined with a stroll to the port (with its fishing boats and fish market) and back along the promenade with its attractive bars and restaurants, shops and terraces, to enjoy the cool sea breezes and watch all the other visitors walking, jogging and cycling along. And, if you like modern architecture, you can have a look at the Virgen de Loreto church, a concrete structure shaped like a ship!

For further details ring 639 979 678 (Elvira speaks English) or on the web page of Amata www.amata.es (in Spanish and English, also useful if you want to learn the local lingo).
