gained notice as a member of the group Fiddler’s Fling, heard regularly on CFRA radio. The host of the show (and another “washboard” player was Frank Jones, who would go on to great fame in Nashville producing sessions for many of Columbia Records top stars and their classic hits). Orval Prophet was signed to Decca Records and recorded his first sessions at Castle Studios was among the first in Nashville in 1952...including his classic hits: The Judgement Day Express, I’m Going Back to Birmingham and The Travellin’ Kind. In 1957 Orval Prophet recorded another session in Nashville, this one yielding the hit single Mademoiselle, and to reach a wider audience the record label urged Prophet to release the record under the stage pseudonym of “Johnny Six”. The marketing ploy worked well and provided Orval Prophet (aka “Johnny Six”), with an international hit re- cord...another ‘first’ for an Ottawa Valley country music performer.

Orval Prophet’s new persona led him to a brief stay on

Orval Prophet (aka “Johnny Six”) was first Ottawa Valley performer to be inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame.

Country Music paid homage to Hank Lariviere’s music with a 28-song CD re-issue of many of his RCA and Rodeo/Banff recordings.

Orval Prophet (1922-1984) was the first country artist out of the Ottawa Valley to generate worldwide attention. Born in Edwards, Ontario, Orval Prophet first

the WWVA Wheeling West Virginia Jamboree in the USA and in 1958 he toured cross-Canada as a show-opener for Johnny Cash. But Orval Prophet, and his short-lived namesake Johnny Six, had their roots firmly planted in the Ottawa Valley, and he soon returned “home” where he continued to pursue his music career until his untime- ly passing on January 4, 1984.

In 1989 Orval Prophet became the first Ottawa Valley-

born performer to be inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

(In the next COUNTRY ROOTS column we’ll talk more about the Ottawa Valley’s early country music history and stars like Bob King, The Happy Wanderers, Ken Reynolds, Ron McMunn, Irwin Prescott, and much more.)
