THE SPRING BEAR HUNT IS BACK! By the time you get this edition of
Bounder, for the first time since 1998 many bear hunters will already have participated in the re-establishment of the Ontario spring bear hunt. In 1999, the spring bear hunt was closed under pressure of lobbyists. Since the closure of the spring hunt, new wildlife manage- ment knowledge has emerged about the benefits of the spring hunt on northern and rural Ontario communities. For the next five years, the 88 Wild- life Management Units (WMUs) that also have an established fall bear hunting season will reopen spring seasons under the auspices of the MNRF’s spring pilot project. This is an extension of the proj- ect that was held in 8 northern Ontario WMUs over the past 2 years. Incidental- ly, WMU 65 which includes the Ottawa area is not included in the group of 88. This year’s hunting dates range between May 1 and June 15th .
BE SAFE THIS SUMMER! And finally, as you enjoy many of the outdoors opportunities that are provided to us in the Ottawa area, be safe out there this summer, and we will see you again in the fall!
