the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Tackle- Share loan program by borrowing a rod and reel to go fishing at no cost.
Launched in 1998, this pro- gram even provides participants with an assortment of tackle you can use. All you have to do is locate a loaner site in your area from one of the more than 140 sites that are distributed through- out the province.
The closest site to us here in Ottawa can be found about an hour’s drive away at the Easter Seals Camp Merrywood, situated near Port Elmsley. As an estab- lished angler, if you are interested in assisting with the program, organizers are always looking for supporting sponsors. You can contact them at their location in Peterborough, and help introduce someone to a life-time of adven- ture and fun.
There is also the OFAH/OPG
Travelling TackleShare program that will be on the road visiting a number of Ontario Parks again this year. Last year, one stop of the travelling edition could be found at Bon Echo Provincial Park on August 22nd. As of our press time, this year’s dates and locations have not been publi- cized, but keep a watch for dates in the Ottawa area by consulting the program’s website.
I would say the program is a win-win situation for any new or young angler that wants to try the sport of fishing for the first time.
